Class #3 Lecture FollowUp

1. How do Mutu's Human/insect/machine-like distortions of the body relate to conventional notions of female beauty?

Mutu's Human/insect/machine-like distortion of body relates to society's conventional notion of female beauty. She places heavy makeup on the face of the human subject to correspond with her long locks of rope-like hair.

  2. Describe how one of her works functions formally. How is the work beautiful and how is it ugly.

Mutu's 'Suspended Playtime" piece is a beautiful fun piece to look at as it's grouped and aligned along many other football-like black balls and hanged from the ceiling by complimentary gold strings. However, the internal features of the piece are not so flattering; made from garbage and other recycled materials to the fill the garbage bag to turn it into a round ball figure.
